Aishwarya Rai Bachchan continues to be gracing and wowing at the Cannes Film Festival since 2002. The world’s most beautiful woman was the very first Indian celebrity to be invited for the Cannes Film Festival all these years ago.
Aishwarya has set various fashion trends through the years right from Gucci gowns to Sabyasachi bridal sarees to her well-known purple lip moment! Here’s looking back at all of Aishwarya Rai’s dazzling appearances at Cannes Film Festival over the years.
2002: A global icon and lovely lady made her Cannes debut in 2002 at the premiere of “Devdas”. Together with her director Sanjay Leela Bhansali and main actor Shah Rukh Khan, she went the traditional route. Aishwarya made her first appearance in a Neeta Lulla saree, with heavy gold jewellery. While many applauded her style sensibility to take the conventional Indian route, although slightly over the top, it was a elegant first appearance.
2003: Returning to Cannes as a jury member, Aishwarya maintained her conventional style sensibilities and chose close friend Neeta Lulla to design once again. Of the three appearance, the Neeta Lulla neon green outfit created an impact in 2003 but the pink strapless with the embellished skirt and brownish and red lehenga set, failed to make an impression on red carpet. All looks went over the top and could not enhance the actress’ beauty and grace. Unflattering choices, these kind of ensembles outlined her depressing style choices.
2004: Aishwarya was walking as the brand representative of L’Oreal for the first time, an association which has ongoing till now and the lady extended her connection with Neeta Lulla too. Wearing the gown with jewelry from Chopard, the silver sequined gown with cut outs and a uncovered back were unflattering and the scarf was merely an unnecessary accessory. This time too she failed to make an impression.
2005: Aishwarya, after 3 years of criticism, appeared in the red carpet in Gregory Armani’s printed outfit in 2005 and just nailed it. A black Gucci gown with a short train and a plunging neckline displayed the stunner like never before. The lady finally hit the nail on the head to make a trend in 2005.
2006: Aishwarya Rai starrer ‘Provoked’ had been screened at Cannes in 2006. 2007: Walking red carpet for the first time, freshly weds Aishwarya and Abhishek made an elegant appearance in 2007. Wearing a bustier Giorgio Armani outfit accessorised with a diamond choker, the look was simple and stylish. Abhishek accompanied wife Aishwarya and walked hand in hand for the screening of Mani Ratnam directed “Guru” starring the newly married couple. The teaser of Ashutosh Gowarikar’s larger than life “Jodhaa Akbar” was also screened at cannes festival that year.

Aishwarya surprised the world with three looks that comprised the golden color Armani, black and a bright Cavalli fuchsia pink gown Aishwarya’s 3 looks for the year were a mixed bag. While the lace gown by Giorgio Armani was a stunner, the fuschia Roberto Cavalli gown was not her better option. The black gown would have been a classy appearance if not for the noticeable creases which took away from the beauty of it all.
2009: She appeared as if a vision in white in her Roberto Cavalli ruffled gown. The gery Elie Saab also complimented her figure and was obviously a great choice for the red carpet, making her look gracefully stylish.

The white and blue Armani Prive outfit looked stunning on Aishwarya. The hairdo with the dress made a lot of difference to the appearance. The off-shoulder embroidered Elie Saab gown made a wonderful style statement at the red carpet. She undoubtedly was at her best in 2011.
2012: Following the birth of daughter Aaradhya, Ash very first seen on the red carpet of Cannes. She faced lots of criticism during that time. She chose to wear an Elie Saab embellished midnight blue outfit having a defined waist and followed it up traditionally with a white embroidered Abu-Jani and Sandeep Khosla saree with jacket blouse.
2013: The black and grey Elie Saab gown played best for her plus size physique. While the blue Gucci gown appeared breathtaking, the hot pink lips and a high extravagant bun gained mixed reviews. Her Abu Jani Sandeep Kholsa floor length anarkali with colourful embelleshment and sabyasachi sarees failed to make impact at the red carpet.
